TOKA tells the story of three siblings looking for a way out of a 27-year long blood feud between two families disputing land ownership. This work is inspired by the ancient custom of blood taking (gjakmarrja), a practice of law enforcement in remote parts of Northern Albania. This work in progress is an exploration in story driven text and non-linear contemporary dance.
PHASE TWO (MAY 2018) & PHASE THREE (JUNE 2019) These two phases of the development of the project are part of lemonTree's Residency at Theatre Passe Muraille which culminate in 2 public presentations of the work as part of BUZZ. Phase Two of development was also generously supported by Cahoots Theatre .
PHASE ONE (JANUARY 2017) Our January 2017 workshop period featured performers Indrit Kasapi, Thomas Olajide and Arlen Aguayo Stewart with director Jonathan Seinen and choreographer William Yong. From January 2017 until June 2017, Indrit Kasapi continued work on the text as a member of The Foundry writers unit at Factory Theatre. This workshop period was made possible by Ontario Arts Council's Theatre Creator's Reserve Grants recommended by Theatre Passe Muraille, Factory Theatre and Theatre Centre as well as by Canadian Stage's RBC Emerging Artist Program.
We acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, which last year invested $153 million to bring the arts to Canadians throughout the country.
